«Lunch and Learn» session – Structural development of the Northern North Sea

“Lunch & Learns” are an effective way to discuss and immerge into a Structural Geology topic for some hours of the busy work day, and many of us are and will be busy over the autumn. There is not always time to get in depth with the regional geology of a specific AOI in the exploration business, so in order to make it possible for many of us and our colleagues (who might not necessarily be structural geologists), to obtain an overview of the structural development of the Southern and Northern North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and Barents area, we are launching Lunch and Learns on these topics.

The session of the structural development of the Northern North Sea is held by Håkon Fossen, Professor for Structural Geology at the University of Bergen:

Post-Caledonian extensional evolution of West Norway and its relationship to the formation and evolution of the northern North Sea

We know a lot about the Jurassic of the northern North Sea Rift, but much less about the way the rift initiated, the influence of preexisting structures. and the nature of the deeper parts of the rifted crust. We are gradually obtaining a new and better understanding of the onshore tectonic evolution from the Caledonian climax through the history of rifting that is of interest to anyone interested in a complete understanding of rifting in the North Sea. In this presentation I will give an overview of the onshore structural framework formed during post-Caledonian extension, and how this framework, and its extension into the North Sea, may have influenced the current architecture of the rift.
