CO2 EOR and storage in NCS

CO2-EOR has been practiced on a commercial scale for several decades, starting in oil fields in the Permian Basin in the US in the seventies.

Several studies of CO2 injection for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) show that recovery from producing fields on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) could be increased by injecting CO2. However, insufficient supplies of CO2 as well as lack of experience from offshore fields present challenges.  Industrial carbon capture and storage (CCS) offers the potential to overcome some of the challenges. The idea is that CO2 EOR can add value by increasing oil recovery while at the same time offering a bridge to a reduced carbon emissions future.

This seminar is aimed to address some of the possible use of CO2 to maximize the hydrocarbon production and go through the potential and challenges of CO2 EOR in NCS. Moreover, the aim is to enhance the understanding behind CO2 EOR by presenting the results from research studies and  field implementation.
